Connecting the Broome community batteries as soon as possible
We've been working hard to get the batteries safely connected to the network - so you can switch on your rooftop solar system. Unfortunately along the way we've experienced unforeseen setbacks and we understand your frustration - we need to do better.
To keep you updated on our progress, we'll provide a weekly update on the testing status over the coming weeks so you're notified first of the confirmed date to energise your system. We encourage you to get in touch using the form below so our team can quickly respond to any questions or concerns you may have.
13 February 2023 |
This week, the batteries will continue their third and final phase of testing. The batteries continue to perform well, operating as expected. |
6 February 2023 |
We have now been running the batteries through both daytime and night time periods. We've found that they have been operating as expected and performing well. We're continuing to fine-tune the battery settings and reviewing the data from the batteries so they work efficiently on the Broome grid. The battery has now passed two of the three stages of the reliability run. This week we will commence the final testing stages and the progress to date has been significant. Current performance indicates that we are on track to enable energisation from the 28th February. |
30 January 2023 |
Last week the batteries completed the first phase of their reliability run The batteries have been operating safely for a number of days since last week while we monitor their performance. We've found that they have been operating as expected and helping to keep the grid stable. This week we are fine-tuning the batteries to enable them to operate efficiently on the Broome grid. There are three phases to the reliability run, and there is a risk that any further issues encountered could cause delays - but we'll be doing all we can to avoid this. |
23 January 2023 |
This week we're aiming to recommence the 30 day battery reliability run This final testing phase allows Horizon Power to monitor the battery to ensure it performs as intended over a set period. If the battery settings are successfully updated and the reliability run is able to recommence next week, then you could be able to switch on your solar system by 28 February. There is a risk that any further issues encountered could cause delays - but we'll be doing all we can to avoid this. We will be sending you a weekly update on the progress - so you're notified first when it's okay to switch on solar. |
Steps to connect community batteries
The community batteries are the first of their kind to be connected to a microgrid like Broome in Australia - and play an important role in our transition to more renewable energy.
When there is excess energy generated by rooftop solar, it will be absorbed by the batteries which simultaneously smooths the flow of energy back into the network. This ensures the reliability of Broome's power supply and allows for a greater uptake of rooftop solar.
Before the batteries can be commissioned, our engineering team will carry out rigorous testing to make sure they can be safely connected to the network and provide a continuous, reliable power supply to the community.
Construction
Complete
The batteries are shipped and installed in Broome.
Testing and inspection
Complete
A series of initial tests are run to make sure the battery unit itself is working. It's not connected to the network at this stage.
Network connection
Complete
Once it passes the initial testing phase, the battery is connected to the network and is ready for further testing.
Functional testing
Complete
Once connected to the network, we perform additional testing to make sure all components and systems working as expected.
Reliability testing
Phase one - Complete
This is the first phase of our final testing process, simulating the different conditions on our network. During this phase, we test and monitor the batteries operation during daylight, business hours.
Reliability testing
Phase two - We are here!
This is phase two of our final testing process. During this phase, we'll test how the batteries respond to both day and night conditions from Monday to Friday.
Reliability testing
Phase three - To be completed
This is the third and final phase of our testing process, where we monitor the 24/7 performance of the batteries to ensure they are ready to become operational.
Fully operational
Current ETA - end Feb 2023
After the reliability testing is complete, the battery is fully operational - allowing more rooftop solar to be safely connected to the network.
