Exmouth Power Project

As WA transitions to a renewable energy future, we’re here to collaborate with and support our Exmouth community along the way

Project overview

In 2020 and 2021, we met with the Exmouth community to explore and collaborate on your future energy needs.  Since then, we’ve been working on more renewable energy as part of transitioning to a cleaner energy system in line with the WA Government decarbonisation targets.  
 
The Exmouth Power Project includes: 

  • A solar farm (with ground-mounted solar PV cells) 
  • Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) 
  • Exploration of thermal energy systems to help make sure reliable power is always available 

The new renewable energy solutions such as solar farms need land and there have been some delays in acquiring the land for this project. Despite our best efforts, these delays have had an impact on our project timelines. 

Some of the factors which can have an impact on finding a suitable location include the ability to support infrastructure and technical functions, visibility and community acceptance, Department of Defence, Town Planning Scheme, environmental, native title and heritage as well as geotechnical and land tenure arrangements.

Project Timeline

  • 2020

    We spoke to members of the Exmouth community, our customers, environmental groups, government agencies, independent power producers and tourism businesses. These discussions helped to shape our plans, products and services. 

  • 2021
    After further collaboration with the community, we presented our plans for a new renewable energy system in Exmouth in October 2021. Plans included 80% renewables to be delivered as part of WA’s transition to a lower carbon energy system. 
  • 2023

    In January 2023, the Exmouth Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) was installed and commissioned. 

    The BESS is located at the Exmouth Power Station and is able to store more than 2,000kW of excess solar generated by rooftop solar in the area. 

    For the remaining renewable energy solutions, the integrated resource planning (IRP) process is now complete and the Exmouth Power Project has entered a defining stage.  

  • 2024
    As we continue to work through some challenges acquiring the land needed for a solar farm, the most effective solutions will be fully defined and costed before plans are finalised and the system is delivered. 
  • 2025
    We estimate that construction will be now completed in 2025.

New renewable energy options for Exmouth

We spoke with the Exmouth community about some different options which will be available as part of the new energy system. Based on feedback from your community, we’ve been working hard to develop ways more ways to increase renewable energy for a cleaner future.

Sunshine Saver is on the horizon

We’ve created a new subscription-based product called Sunshine Saver. It’s designed to help eligible customers to save on their energy bills and share in the benefits of our investment in local renewable energy across WA. Sunshine Saver will be offered to eligible members of the Exmouth community when your new Exmouth Power Project is complete.
