Apply to connect solar to our network

Before you purchase solar, you need to apply for approval to connect to the electricity network.

This is to ensure your system meets our technical requirements and can safely connect to the electricity grid, without impacting on the reliability of supply to the town. Here’s an overview of the process:

Step 1

Understand your options

Before you start the application process, you need to know what you are eligible to apply for.

Use the calculator to find out the buyback rate in your town, if you meet the criteria to apply and any technical considerations you should discuss with your installer.

Step 2

Locate an installer

A list of accredited installers and some other useful information for households is available on the Clean Energy Council website.

Your solar installer will discuss your usage patterns, technical requirements, the installation process and provide a quote. You can download your usage history directly from our free app, to help your installer recommend a system that's right for your property. 

Step 3

Submit an application

When you’re happy to proceed, it’s time to complete an application form to connect to our network. You can complete this form online, and your installer will help you with the technical information you need to provide.

There are no application fees for standard applications. For those applications that require more detailed technical assessments (systems that include generation or Feed-in Management), additional fees may apply and we recommend you discuss this with your installer. You must receive approval from Horizon Power in writing before purchasing a solar energy system.

Step 4

Assessment and approval

We will notify both you and your installer in writing to let you know the outcome of your application. We may request additional information during this time. For Basic Micro EG connections, you may be granted approval to connect to the grid.

We are currently experiencing a high volume of applications and the current processing time is 30 days.

Applications for larger systems (LV EG connections) that require more detailed technical assessments will take longer, and fees may apply. Please discuss this with your installer. After detailed technical assessments have been completed you may be granted provisional approval to install. 

Step 5

Installation

Once your application has been approved to connect to the grid, your installer can proceed with the installation and get you connected. Your system must be installed and Horizon Power must have received and accepted a preliminary and completion notice from your contractor within three months of the approved application, otherwise the approval to connect will lapse and you must reapply. 

This process may take longer for larger systems that require detailed technical assessments and generation management.

Where provisional approval to install has been granted, your installer can proceed with the installation however there will be a number of conditions that need to be met before connecting to the grid. Typically, the performance of any required generation management will need to be demonstrated to Horizon Power at this stage.

Step 6

Completion and billing

For provisionally approved systems, formal approval to connect to the grid will be granted when the completion notice is received and all other conditions stated have been met.

Once we have received the completion notice from your installer or electrical contractor, we will reconfigure your meter so that it measures the amount of electricity you are exporting back to the network and any electricity you are using from the network. The $26.00 meter configuration fee will appear on your next bill, along with the relevant renewable energy buyback information.
