Power Ahead Research Pilot

Play video

You’ve told us you want, more pricing options and we’re listening

Five hundred Port Hedland residents and businesses are participating in our Power Ahead research pilot to help us develop a new mobile phone style plan for electricity with on-peak/off-peak elements. Through the pilot, we’ll test and shape features of this new product which could in the future be offered to all customers.

Together we’re shaping the future of electricity pricing.

About Power Ahead

Participants in Power Ahead are being set a challenge to stay under an allocated unit allowance during the peak period (between 1 pm and 8 pm) and will earn bill credits if they do. We want to understand what changes customers are willing and able to make to shift their demand to the off-peak period. To help, we’re giving participants access to a free smart phone app that shows how much electricity they’re using during the peak.

Everyone who takes part will continue to pay their regular electricity bills, charged as they are now, but those who can make changes will be rewarded with a bill credit of up to $1,100 for residents and $3,200 for businesses.

At the end of the pilot, we’ll ask participants how they found making changes and whether they like the idea of being able to better manage their electricity costs by using less electricity during the peak.

Residents

Most residents who take part in the pilot have the opportunity to earn $800 and some as much as $1,100. All participants will have the opportunity to earn at least $300.

Businesses

Most business owners who take part have the opportunity to earn $1,200 and some as much as $3,200. All participants will have the opportunity earn at least $300.

Power Ahead will run from 1 December 2016 until 31 March 2017. During December, participants won't lose any of their incentive if they exceed their allowance but from 4 January 2017 until 31 March 2017, the value of the incentive will reduce each time it is exceeded. If participants exceed their allowance more than the number of times we specify via the app, they’ll lose all the incentive.

We’ll use their input and the data from the research pilot to then develop an Australian first mobile phone style electricity plan with on-peak/off-peak pricing model elements in which electricity allowances will be bundled into mobile or internet style plans.

Getting to know you…

You'll need to complete a survey for each participating home and business premise. The survey asks questions about the people living or working in the participating home or business and the electrical appliances used. The survey results will help us develop our final product. You qualify for $50 for each survey completed.

Late November 2016

On your mark!

Before we can start the research pilot, we need you to download and log into the Power Ahead app. The app shows your financial incentive and your peak allowance. When you have completed this step, we will credit your account for $50 for each survey completed or, if you live in accommodation where your electricity bills are paid by an employer or similar, pay you directly by cheque.

December 2016

Get set...

This month you won't lose any of your incentive if you exceed your peak allowance. Practice using the app and find out what changes you might need to make to when and how you use electricity to stay within your peak allowance.

January - March 2017

Go!

The challenge starts on 4 January 2017. From this date, all research pilot rules apply. This means you need to stay within your peak allowance to avoid losing some or all your incentive.

April 2017

What did you think?

The research pilot has finished but we’re really keen to know what you thought about it. Complete a post-pilot survey or take part in a focus group and we’ll give you an additional $50 for each survey completed. We’ll credit your account for $50 for each survey completed or, if you live in accommodation where your electricity bills are paid by an employer or similar, pay you directly by cheque.

September - October 2016

We want you!

We're recruiting for the research pilot. Once we have assessed your application, we’ll email you as soon as possible to let you know whether your home or business is suitable for the research pilot and confirm if your application is successful.

Participant information

Click here if you’re an approved Power Ahead participant for more information about the pilot; including how to download the app and find out your peak allowance and incentive.

Please note:

Any financial incentives will be credited to the registered electricity account at the end of the pilot or, if you live in accommodation where your electricity bills are paid by an employer or similar, paid directly to you by cheque. Participants are required to complete a post pilot survey/focus group to receive the incentive.

The research conducted as a part of Power Ahead does not mean that electricity tariffs will change. Your participation will simply help us gather some of the information needed for us to suggest whether policy makers, including the State Government, should consider making any changes.

Online applications to participate in Power Ahead closed on 31 October 2016. If you would like to participate, please phone us on 1800 795 089.
