Overview

If you can generate electricity for your own home from renewable energy sources you can sell any excess renewable energy back to Horizon Power.

Most home renewable energy systems (eg. photovoltaic arrays, wind turbines or micro-hydro power systems) will produce more energy than is required at certain times during the day and less than is required at other times.

For times when the renewable energy system is not producing enough energy, customers can use energy stored in batteries, or connect their system to Horizon Power's electricity grid.

Horizon Power recognises the environmental benefits of renewable energy systems and will buy the excess energy generated from them.

The Scheme applies to renewable energy systems from 500 watts to 10 kilowatts one phase or 30 kilowatts three phase in generating capacity.  (Approval of systems greater than 5 kilowatts is subject to a network impact study.) For systems of higher capacity, Horizon Power will review applications on a case by case basis.

Customers on this scheme are billed for their net import and credited for their net export of electricity over a billing period.

Residential customers are offered renewable energy buyback rates equal to their electricity purchase rate, less the GST component.  This means that Horizon Power will buy power from the customer at 10/11ths of the price Horizon Power sells to the customer.

For multi-residential premises, each premise must be connected to the renewable energy system of a size equivalent to more than 500 watts and up to 10 kW 1 phase or 30 kW 3 phase to be eligible.  Horizon Power may also require changes to metering requirements to allow eligible customers, at multi-residential premises to participate.

Horizon Power will install appropriate bi-directional meters to measure the amount of imported and exported electricity.  The cost of metering is calculated and itemised separately.

The Scheme is also open to non-profit organisations and to educational institutions (schools, TAFE, universities).  However, the buyback rate reflects the applicable tariff for these customers.
