Kimberley Town-Based Communities Electricity Network Upgrades (TRRP)

Under the Town Reserves Regularisation Program (TRRP) phase three, the Department of Housing has contracted Horizon Power to audit, design and undertake electricity network upgrades for the West Kimberley communities of Looma and Mowanjum. In the town-based community of Bayulu, Horizon Power designed the upgrade of the network and the work was undertaken by Department of Housing contractors. The upgrade was required because the load had greatly increased when 17 new community houses were built to accommodate the growing number of Bayulu residents. The upgrade work by Department of Housing contractors including checking and upgrading internal house wiring.

Horizon Power connected the upgraded Bayulu network to Horizon Power's system in October, delivering safer and more reliable power supplies to that community.

Work in Looma and Mowanjum is now well advanced and is scheduled to be completed mid year 2013.

Horizon Power upgraded the electrical distribution networks and internal house wiring in 25 town-based communities under phase one and two of TRRP between 2005 and 2010. Horizon Power engages closely with the governing bodies of each community and residents to ensure positive outcomes for each project. Education is also delivered about electrical safety and energy efficiency.

Why have these communities been chosen?
The Department of Housing selects communities to be regularised based on set criteria, which includes the proximity of the community to the near-by town and its access to existing utility owned infrastructure.
