Release Date: 18 February 2010
After a rigorous commissioning and testing period, the gas turbine installed in the new Karratha Power Station reached and maintained the reliability and performance targets required to commence commercial operations on Sunday 14 February.
Horizon Power will have direct control of the new Karratha Power Station, which is a shift from historical power supply arrangements in the Pilbara that have previously been under contracts with mining companies.
Horizon Power’s Managing Director, Rod Hayes commented that “the construction of this power station allows us to have a direct relationship with our customers, ensuring we have greater control over our ability to deliver a reliable and high quality power supply”.
The constructor, owner and operator of the new power station, ATCO Power, was pleased to deliver this major milestone on time. Geoff Walshe, Managing Director ATCO Power Australia said, “the relationship between ATCO and Horizon Power is proving very effective as we reached this milestone without any incident”.
When completed, the gas fired power station will provide 86 MW into the North West Interconnected System, generating it with modern, energy efficient technology and significantly lowering the carbon emissions produced.
The second gas turbine remains to be commissioned and commercial operation of this turbine will complete the project.
