Release Date: 29 January 2010
Horizon Power welcomes the State Government's announcement on 28 January, committing the remaining funds required to complete the $130 million Pilbara Underground Power Project, funded through the Royalties for Regions fund with a contribution from local government.
The project will be managed by Horizon Power and will see overhead powerlines placed underground in the towns of Karratha, South Hedland, Onslow and Roebourne, protecting them from damage caused during extreme weather events which frequent the region. Underground power is also proven to improve the safety, reliability and quality of the power supply and improve overall aesthetics of a town.
Rod Hayes, Horizon Power’s Managing Director, said that “We are thrilled to lead this exciting project and to partner with the State and Local Governments to support their vision of improving the quality of life for Pilbara residents.
“In the Pilbara specifically, underground power has already proven its value in both Port Hedland and Point Samson, where no power interruptions have been experienced in the last 12 months.
“In an area like the Pilbara, reliable power is integral to the success of the local industry,” said Mr Hayes.
Horizon Power will commence works in Karratha in July 2010, with South Hedland to follow in June 2011. Onslow and Roebourne are both due to commence in 2012, with the entire project planned to be completed by the end of that year.
The project will also include a distribution voltage upgrade to Karratha, increasing from 11kV to 22kV. Mr Hayes said “the voltage upgrade will provide increased power capacity required for Karratha to expand under its vision to become a city.”
Local Government is a major partner in the project, both financially and also ensuring their communities’ aspirations are considered throughout the project.
Horizon Power looks forward to working with the Shire of Roebourne, the Town of Port Hedland and Shire of Ashburton as the project progresses. “The partnership between Horizon Power, the State Government and your local Council is sure to deliver a successful outcome for this project,” said Mr Hayes.
