Betterways energy saving brochures

Release Date: 9 June 2008

There are many ways to save energy in your home and reduce your electricity bill.  While the greatest opportunity to save is with appliances that use the most power - such as water heating and space heating/cooling - even small changes such as new light globes can go a long way in reducing the amount of energy you use, along with your electricity bill.

Some energy saving ideas to consider are:
• Insulate your home. Insulation reduces the amount of outdoor heat penetrating your home in summer, while in winter it helps to keep the heat indoors.
• Make sure your hot water system outlet pipe is well insulated.
• Adjust the louvres on the air conditioner so they face downwards for heating and upwards for cooling.
• Use your kettle, not the stove, when you need to boil small amounts of water for tea or coffee.
• Load the dishwasher to capacity before running it.
