Trees and branches are a common cause of power failures as they can fall across powerlines during high winds. This is particularly true in regional areas, where powerlines are longer and there is a lot of natural bushland, posing a bushfire risk.
The vegetation clearance zones around powerlines vary according to the type of line involved. More information is available on vegetation clearance zones and clearance responsibilities.
As a general rule, trees should be no closer than three metres from powerlines. Councils are generally responsible for trimming trees along verges and road reserves. Property residents, including tenants, are responsible for trimming trees. However, tree trimming can be dangerous, so please do not carry out the work yourself.
If you notice trees other than those on your property that may need to be trimmed, please contact your local council office or Horizon Power office.
Ensuring that trees and other vegetation are kept clear of powerlines could save you and your neighbours from experiencing power failures when the next strong winds or storms hit.
