Cooperative Agreement

Horizon Power is a member of the Greenhouse Challenge Plus administered by the Australian Greenhouse Office. Our Cooperative Agreement identifies actions that Horizon Power could undertake to abate the rate of greenhouse gas emissions from its operation in the production and delivery of electricity in Western Australia.

The most effective actions for reducing greenhouse gases from electricity use are:

  • use of more greenhouse friendly fuels to generate electricity;
  • use of more efficient electricity generation and transmission technologies;
  • use of renewable energy sources to replace fossils fuels for electricity generation;
  • conserve energy by designing and using more efficient buildings, appliances and equipment; and
  • change practices to reduce energy wastage.

Horizon Power's Cooperative Agreement actions cover:

  • purchase of electricity from independent co-generation and renewable energy projects;
  • increased use of natural gas to replace liquid fuels in electricity generation;
  • increased use of renewable energy generators such as wind farms at Esperance, Hopetoun and Coral Bay; and
  • education on energy use and greenhouse gas emissions.
