How do I choose an electricity retailer?

Hints and tips on choosing an electricity supplier.

Do I have to change my electricity retailer?

No you do not have to change.  Horizon Power will continue to provide you with electricity and accounts in the normal way.

Although other retailers are available to customers located in the South West Interconnected System, there are no other retailers currently available in the North West Interconnected System and regional non-interconnected systems.

If I am able to make a choice of retailer, what will I be choosing?

You will be choosing the retailer who sells electricity to you on the terms and conditions of an offer that is accepted by you. You may not be choosing the companies that generate electricity.

A retailer is a company that sells electricity and is in charge of purchasing energy on your behalf. However some retailers have access to certain types of generation.

As with phone bills, Retailers may compete on various factors whether it be price, the structure of your tariff, whether they sell you other products, the period of your billing cycle (monthly or quarterly), how you are allowed to pay for your bill, as well as other services such as advice on how to save electricity.

What happens if I move?

In the first instance you will need to check your current supply arrangement to see if you have to provide notice or terminate that current supply arrangement.

If you choose to exit your contract you will have to provide notice, and your contract will show what this notice is. If you are in a market contract, you may have to pay a termination fee.

Regardless of what your contractual arrangement is, you should provide 3 business days notice of your vacation of the old premises.

I'm renting - can I enter a contract with a retailer?

Yes, the person who directly pays for electricity used at a rental property has the right to choose the retailer for that property.

Please note however this may not be the case if you receive a bill from your landlord or electricity is included in your rent.

Will my tariff change in any way?

No. Existing tariffs are regulated by the Government and no customer will be forced to change their tariff. The only exception to this would be if you are not connected to the correct tariff, for example a business on a residential tariff.

It is important to note that existing tariffs will act as a safety net, so regardless of your situation, you will always be able to obtain a tariff from Horizon Power.
