New power stations are being established in five communities in the Kimberley – Broome, Derby, Fitzroy Crossing, Halls Creek and Looma.
The Project aims to replace ageing power stations with modern, efficient and more environmentally-friendly power stations that will be able to meet the needs of local communities for the next twenty years.
The diesel-powered Looma Power Station was successfully commissioned on Saturday, 2 June 2007 and is now supplying power to the communities of Camballin and Looma.
The new power stations in Broome, Derby, Fitzroy Crossing and Halls Creek will begin supplying residents of the towns in October/November 2007.
Four of the five power stations will be fuelled with liquefied natural gas (LNG), while the fifth – the Looma/Camballin power station – is a new, state-of-the-art diesel station, which will emit relatively low greenhouse gas emissions.
Fuel for the power stations will be supplied from a new LNG plant built near Karratha. The LNG plant is being commissioned and will commence supplying LNG from October 2007.
