Horizon Power is upgrading its distribution network in rural areas surrounding Esperance, including Hopetoun and Norseman, to improve the reliability and quality of service to customers.

The upgrade is also designed to minimise the risk of pole-top fires and clashing wires which can lead to bushfires.

As part of the project, Horizon Power will inspect up to 23,000 power poles and other structures in the area, to ensure they comply with regulatory and safety requirements.  Project funding of $12 million has been allocated over the four year timeframe to complete the work.

Transfield Services was the successful Bidder to undertake the enhancement program on Horizon Power's behalf, with contractual agreements signed on 15 December 2006.  External resources were sought due to the size of the area requiring inspection.

The formal sign-off has triggered the mobilisation of staff and resources to the Esperance region.  Additional benefits to Esperance will include a boost to the town's population, with many families of Transfield employees associated with the Project likely to take up permanent residency.

Customers in the Esperance region will be kept up to date on the Project through local media, as well as communications from Horizon Power and Transfield Services.
