Indigenous Students Work Experience Program

Horizon Power’s Indigenous Student Work Experience Program (ISWEP) seeks to give high school based Indigenous students the opportunity to gain experience in a number of different fields within Horizon Power’s metropolitan and regional locations.

ISWEP is administered by Horizon Power’s People Services department and forms an integral part of Horizon Power’s Aboriginal Training and Employment Strategy.

Placements are offered in the following disciplines:

  • Administration/Reception
  • Accounts
  •  *Electrical - Field Services
  • Public Affairs/Community Relations
  • People Services
  •  **IT

*Placements available from early 2009.
**Placements available from mid 2009.

In the following locations:

  • Bentley (Perth): Administration/Reception, Accounts, IT, Public Affairs and People Services.
  • Karratha, Broome, Kununurra, Esperance, Port Hedland, Karratha, Carnarvon: Administration/Reception, Accounts and Electrical.

During placement, students will be assigned to a Formal Leader who will supervise them during their placement. Upon program completion, students will receive feedback from their Formal Leader.

Work experience is unpaid. Placements are structured according to the Department of Education and Training (DET) guidelines in consultation with the participating school and the relevant Horizon Power Formal Leader. The approval of work experience is subject to availability.

By participating in the program, students will develop their ability to communicate, work in a team, solve problems specific to their work, time management and additional computer skills.  Students will gain experience in a real workplace environment. This experience will help to equip students for employment at the completion of their studies. Students will also gain confidence, enhance interpersonal skills and establish potentially valuable work contacts.

Who can apply?

The program is open to all Indigenous students in Years 10 to 12.  Students must be currently enrolled at a metropolitan or regional Western Australian high school.
