The Energy Efficiency Program (EEP) is being implemented in five Aboriginal communities in 2011: Bondini, Nambi Road, Ninga Mia, Wongatha and Yungngora.
Horizon Power manages EEP for the WA Government's Office of Energy.
EEP involves the installation or repair of insulation, hot water systems and shade cloth on housing in the communities. Lagging on hot water systems and low-flow shower heads are being installed, and air conditioners are being repaired. As a result of the refits, residents can expect to save as much as 20% on their power expenses.
EEP has resulted in training and work opportunities for approximately 20 trainees who are working towards a Certificate III in Civil Construction. The trainees have gained valuable experience whilst involved with EEP.
Horizon Power has been recognised for its energy efficiency work in Aboriginal communities by the Clean Energy Council (CEC) and Sustainable Energy Association of Australia (SEAAUS).
